Team of the Century

First Era XII (1887 - 1953)
The following players were selected in the Launceston Cricket Club’s 1st Era Team.  The team was selected by cricket historian Rick Smith, former club chairman Terry Coyle and Life Members Don Martin and Jade Selby. To qualify for selection the players had to have played between the years of 1887 and 1953.
 

No. 1 John Horatio Savigny

Player Number - 12

John Savigny is undoubtedly one of the club's greatest players.  An easy choice for the team, Savigny won the Batting Average on 13 occasions.  A true all-rounder his top score is equal club-record 229 and his best bowling figures are 9/79!

No.2 Charles William Beresford Martin

Player Number – 110

Another great all-rounder, Martin was a fine top order bat as well as an exceptional leg spinner. A fine double of 3020 runs and 199 wickets, Martin was an easy choice. As well as his 3 flags for Launceston, he also played 21 times for Tasmania.

No. 3 Geoff William Martin – Vice Capt

Player Number - 173

Cousin of Charles, Geoff continued the Martin connection with Launceston. A fine batsmen, Geoff is 5th on the clubs all-time runs list. He played in 7 premierships and played for Tasmania on 23 occasions – scoring one century. He also took 117 wickets!

No. 4 George Herbert Bailey

Player Number - 40

Bailey was a great for the club before the NTCA. He rejoined the club in 1892. He still managed to play in 2 premierships. Bailey played 17 times for Tasmania and
was part of the first Australian squad to tour the UK.

No. 5 Clifton Linley Jeffrey

Player Number - 326

Jeffrey joined the club in 1945. Having already played for Tasmania, Jeffrey proved to be a fine player for the club. Jeffrey captained the club for 4 seasons and played in 2 premiership teams.

No. 6 Keyran William Jack – Captain

Player Number - 242

Cahill’s career at the club begun in 1929 and his last game for the club was as captain of the colts in 1959. A fine leader, he was an obvious choice for the captaincy. He has scored the 2nd most runs and played the 2nd most games in the clubs history.

No. 7 Thomas Dudley Room

Player Number - 225

Tom Room is a Launceston Club Legend. Not only a fine player he was a fine contributor off the field. In his playing days he scored 2582 runs and played in 7 premierships. The Club Champion Trophy is named in honour of Tom and his brother.

No. 8 Robert Bruce Searl Wardlaw

Player Number - 260

Wardlaw is the wicket-keeper for the team. Wardlaw played 1 game for Tasmania and played in two premierships for Launceston. Not only a fine ’keeper, he was also a fine batsmen.

No. 9 Algernon Percival Findlay

Player Number - 149

Findlay played 18 seasons for the club. A fine leg spinner, Algy took an amazing 614 wickets. By scoring 4239 runs he proved to be a more than handy batsmen. He played in 10 premierships and captained the club for 7 seasons.

No. 10 James Michael Walsh

Player Number - 256

Walsh was a regular selection for Tasmania in the 1930’s. A fine opening bowler for the club he took 124 wickets in 61 matches for the club. Walsh played in 3 premierships for the club.

No. 11 Richard Horace Sams

Player Number - 2

Sams was one of the first fine players the club had in the NTCA. He was vice-captain in the NTCA’s 1st season and played in our first team and first premiership. He also managed to take 204 wickets and play in 3 more premierships.

No. 12 Donald George Ellis

Player Number - 270

Ellis was a fine left-armer in the 30’s & 40’s. In 1946 he took 78 wickets, a then club record that has only been bettered once. Ellis played in four premierships and took 256 wickets for Launceston. He played 1 game for Tasmania.

37 players were nominated for the First Era Team. The selectors had a tough job and the above 12 players received the honour of being selected in the team. The other nominated players were:

One Day Team (1969 - 2004)
The following players have been voted to represent the best one day team that Launceston can produce. To qualify for selection the players had to have played in the One Day Games, these did not begin until 1969.
 

No. 1 David Boon – Captain

Player Number - 45

Boon was the obvious choice as captain. His average for the club of 66.18 stands alone. Boon played over 200 one day games for  Australia and goes down as an Australian great as well as the first picked player for this team.

No.2 Richard Bennett

Player Number – 66

Bennett, with 2084 runs from 52 matches, leads the club for most runs and most matches. He captained the team that won the Kookaburra Cup in 1992. He is an obvious choice for one of the opening positions in this team.

No. 3 David Smith

Player Number - 31

One of the club’s all time most talented players, Smith was a standout player in the one day game. Smith played in a number of one day cup final wins and currently is the third highest run scorer for the club in one day cricket.

No. 4 Christopher Bassano

Player Number - 96

Bassano is one of our leading run scorers and has scored most of those runs batting at number four. Played a pivotal role for Derbyshire in one day cricket.

No. 5 Jade Selby

Player Number - 113

A leading all-rounder for the club, Selby is in the top three for most runs and wickets. Selby was captain of the side that won the Kookaburra Cup in 2004. He has the highest score for the club — 151 not out.

No. 6 Peter Faulkner – Vice Captain

Player Number - 49

No one had reason to argue when this outstanding all-rounders name was read out at number six. Faulkner has an excellent record for Tasmania as well as being twelfth man for the Australian one day team.

No. 7 Gary Goodman

Player Number - 89

Goodman was an outstanding all-rounder. He scored the 1st one day hundred for Tasmania and also scored 111* against Clarence. His off spinners produced 18 wickets for Launceston.

No. 8 Justin Miller

Player Number - 107

Another player in this team with outstanding abilities with both the bat and ball. He was a free scoring left handed batsman and he bowled off spinners that were hard to score from. A fine player, he has kept the Miller name well represented at the club.

No. 9 Kevin Badcock

Player Number - 33

Badcock was a pioneer in the one day game. After having stints at Sth Lton and Mowbray Badcock found his home at Launceston. His terrific allround skills taking him to Tasmanian selection.

No. 10 Tim Coyle

Player Number - 52

Coyle is the wicket-keeper of the team. His outstanding skills saw him represent Tasmania. Clearly an outstanding ’keeper, Coyle’s position of 10 belies his batting talent. He could bat anywhere in the order.

No. 11 Greg Wilson

Player Number - 38

Greg Wilson was named as one of the quick bowlers. He had good pace and accuracy. An outstanding one day record with the ball for the club. He is the alltime leading wicket taker for the club in one dayers.

No. 12 Paul McShane

Player Number - 81

McShane has been an excellent servant for the club. With a great finals record he has produced regularly. In the one day game he is third on the most wickets list for the club with 42, to go with his 246 A Grade wickets.

No. 13 Andrew Belask

Player Number - 87

An extremely talented batsmen, Belsak played 1 one day game for Tasmania. With an excellent career for Launceston no one can question his talent. Also an excellent fielder, he deserves his position as the 13th man for our Best One Day Team.

Second Era XII (1954 - 2004)
The following players have been voted to represent the best Second Era Team that Launceston can produce. To qualify for selection the players had to have played between the years of 1954 and 2004.
 

No. 1 Richard Bennett – Vice Captain

Player Number - 567

Richard Bennett was an obvious choice for one of the opening batting positions. ‘Joey’ holds the record for the most number of runs scored for the club – 8640. Bennett also has scored the most A Grade 100s.

No.2 Bruce Doolan

Player Number – 490

Doolan is the wicket keeper as well as partnering Bennett at the top of the innings. Doolan had a magnificent career for Launceston. He also faced the first ball, scored the first run and was the first dismissed in Tasmania’s debut in Shield cricket.

No. 3 David Boon – Captain

Player Number - 542

The greatest ever player to play for Launceston. In ??? Test Matches he scored ???? runs including ?? 100s. This to go along with his magnificent club career for the Lions, Boon is the obvious choice as captain and the number 3 batsmen.

No. 4 David Smith

Player Number - 522

David Smith had an outstanding career with Launceston. He scored 5212 runs to be in the top 10 in history. As well as having a decorated club career, Smith played both forms of the game for Tasmania. A wonderfully gifted batsmen, Smith sits well at number 4.

No. 5 Christopher Bassano

Player Number - 609

After settling with his family in Tasmania Bassano started at Launceston. A hard player to dismiss he boasts the amazingly high average of 47.22 for the club. His talent has seen him play for Tasmania as well as County team Derbyshire.

No. 6 Gary Goodman

Player Number - 600

Goodman came to Launceston via the NW Coast as well as SA and NSW. He played six seasons with the club and won 6 premierships. A quality top order batsmen, he also took 147 wickets as an off spinner.

No. 7 Peter Faulkner

Player Number - 548

Probably the leading all round cricketer to have played for Launceston. Faulkner could destroy an opposition with his explosive batting or his attacking bowling. Faulkner toured South Africa as part of the Rebel Squad in the 1980’s.

No. 8 Jade Selby

Player Number - 624

The current club captain, Selby has contributed with both the bat and ball for Launceston. He has scored 6687 runs and taken 198 wickets. He has played in 8 premierships.

No. 9 Graeme Miller

Player Number - 431

Miller’s record as an off spinner for the club is unequalled. Taking 471 Wickets has him in 5th as the alltime leading wicket taker. Miller has played the most A Grade Games for the club and he played one game for Tasmania.

No. 10 Greg Wilson

Player Number - 533

Greg Wilson spearheaded the Launceston attack with great success in the late 70s and 80s. A fiery quick bowler, Wilson had an extremely successful career. He represented Tasmania at 1st Class level and played in 5 premierships.

No. 11 Ron Dean

Player Number - 386

Ron ‘Rocky’ Dean is a club legend. Despite not starting with the club until his early 20’s, Rocky took an amazing 901 wickets. This club record is unlikely to be beaten. Rocky is the current club patron and has been for over 20 years.

No. 12 Kevin Miller

Player Number - 406

Kevin Miller was a talented all round cricketer. These talents saw him play for Tasmania. Playing 197 A Grade games with the club, ‘Spike’ took 431 wickets and made 3238 runs – along the way winning 4 premierships. A well credentialed 12th man.
